Saquib and the Family – Rocky Mountains, Summer 2021

Dr. Saquib Ahmed: PI and Group Lead. While not academically engaged, Saquib loves spending time with his family, traveling, and playing soccer/tennis whenever he can!

Current Students

Sumaiyatul Ahsan: Undergraduate Researcher. A final year student in Material and Metallurgical Engineering at BUET. Sumaiya uses computational tools (DFT, MD and AIMD) together with simulation software such as SCAPS to probe her research interests in Battery Materials, Solar Energy and Bio-inspired Materials. In her free time, she loves to read, paint and travel.

Saugata Sarker: Undergraduate researcher (current). Saugata is a senior in the materials and metallurgical engineering program at the Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology (BUET). He is expected to graduate in spring 2022. He is currently working on a number of projects involving machine learning aided physiochemical property investigations of perovskite tandem solar devices utilizing Density functional theory. In his free time, he likes to go on solo adventures involving hiking and paragliding to different countries. He also plays the keyboard in a Bangladeshi band named ‘oddity spell’ and performs in local concerts. As a researcher, he aims to conduct an array of critical investigations via computational and simulation tools together with machine learning to achieve more clarity onto solar devices and semiconductors. Saugata is planning to continue his research and combining it with cutting-edge experimental work during his post-graduate career.

Md. Shafiqul Islam: Undergraduate Researcher (current). Shafi is a senior in Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology. His research interest includes Photovoltaic Devices, Nanotechnology, Thermodynamics, Number Theory, Crystallography, Machine Learning and Computational Materials Science. Currently he is conducting research on the utilization of Machine Learning algorithms to enhance Perovskite Solar Device properties (also part of his undergraduate thesis). He enjoys his free time spending it with family members, watching movies and solving mathematical problems. As a materials scientist and metallurgical engineer, his career objective is to work for an organization which may provide him the opportunity to improve skills and knowledge to grow along with the organization objective as well as encourage him to contribute to science.

Hasan Al Jame: Undergraduate researcher. Hasan is currently pursuing his bachelor’s degree in Materials and Metallurgical Engineering from BUET, in Bangladesh. Hasan's current research consists of application of supervised machine learning and first principal calculations in next generation perovskite solar devices and other aspects of materials science. His areas of interest lie in nanotechnology, advanced materials, and machine learning. Hasan also likes to watch movies, exercise, and travel occasionally in his free time with his friends.

HMd Rafsun Jani: Graduate Researcher (2021). Rafsun completed his graduation from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) in 2021. He has research interests in solar energy materials and thin film technology. Outside of academics, Rafsun enjoys going on vacations with his family and friends, playing racing games, and also, he is a huge fan of the marvel cinematic universe.

Abrar Rauf: Fourth year Undergraduate student studying Materials & Metallurgical Engineering at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology. His research interests, at the moment, include computational materials science, optoelectronic materials & energy storage. He is passionate about theoretical physics and is always eager to engage in research that let him probe any aspects of physical reality at a deeper level. Under the guidance of Dr. Ahmed, he is currently learning and applying Density Functional Theory in order to investigate the theoretical properties of materials such as solar absorbers and superconductors. In the future, He wishes to explore experimental materials science in greater detail during my postgraduate studies and he hopes to be able to use that knowledge to contribute meaningfully and sustainably to society. In his free time, he runs a university debate club, watch political twitch streamers, and play fantasy games.

Previous Students

Jon Shaffer: Undergraduate Researcher (Current). Jon is a Junior in the Mechanical Engineering Technology program, currently conducting research into perovskite based solar cells. He also enjoys attending concerts and music festivals in his spare time, as well as the occasional round of skeet or target shooting.

Sara Deer: Undergraduate Researcher (Current). Sara is a senior at SUNY Buffalo State, Mechanical Engineering Technology major, Mathematics minor. She is expected to graduate in Spring 2020. She has previously participated in research with the Physics department through the Early Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program as well as the Undergraduate Summer Research Program at Buffalo State. Outside of Buffalo State she enjoys spending her time sewing, primarily clothing.

Michael Pham: Undergraduate Researcher (Fall 2018). Michael is a senior in Mechanical Engineering Technology. His research of interests are Solar Energy, 3D printing, Robotics, and Transportation or Vehicles modification. In his free time, he likes to go hiking with his friends and biking around the park, neighborhood, cities, forests, mountains and many more places. Some fun trivia about him include the fact he played the guitar and drums; he loves to sing and dance to any song (cha-cha, rumba, etc..). As a Mechanical Engineer, his goal is to be a technician in any company, with the intent to invent and create something new and useful to benefit what the people want and need.
