BUFFALO STATE COLLEGE
BUSINESS & INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION PROGRAM

SUMMARY OF THE PROGRAM

SUNY College at Buffalo, in collaboration with area businesses and trade-oriented associations, proposes a two-year project with a focus on development of trade with Western Hemisphere countries. Although the focus is on the Western Hemisphere, the program will be of great value for any enterprise with an interest in international business and exporting.

Recent trends in the Western Hemisphere such as the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), Mercosur (a common market among Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, and Paraguay) and other regional trade agreements, and political and economic liberalization in Latin American countries hold great promise for expansion of trade. European and Asian countries are already taking advantage of trade liberalization and privatization to rapidly expand their commercial activities in the Western Hemisphere.

Maintaining U.S. competitiveness in the Western Hemisphere will increasingly require knowledge of opportunities in countries and cultures that are generally unfamiliar to managers and educators in the United States. The goal of the project is to provide the knowledge and the information needed for successful trade initiatives in the Western Hemisphere and elsewhere.

The Business and International Education Program that will involve collaboration among faculty, students, area businesses, and trade-related associations in the pursuit of the following goals:

1. Development of knowledge of trade activities and identification of emerging trade opportunities in the Western Hemisphere.

2. An increase in the understanding of other Western Hemisphere societies and cultures.

3. An increase in the number of Western New York companies engaged in exporting and in the volume of exports.

These goals will be accomplished through the following project activities:

• Faculty development to increase understanding of exporting, international business, and Western Hemisphere countries.

• Development of courses in international business and enhancement of existing courses through course modules that deal with international issues.

• A series of cultural events to promote understanding of Western Hemisphere countries.

• Placement of student interns in companies and organizations with a focus on international trade.

• Development of seminars and workshops for business to improve the potential for trade and to increase the volume of trade.

• Establishment of a World Wide Web site describing program activities and offering information to companies about conducting business in the Western Hemisphere.

The overall outcome of the program for all participants will be improved knowledge of Western Hemisphere neighbors, a more international perspective, and enhanced business opportunities.
