Planning a mini-lesson

 

You must have—

 

A clear, measurable objective  -- What will the student do to demonstrate the learning objective?

 

Clear assessment --  How will you know the student has met the objective?  behavior, performance, testing?

 

Relevant materials – The materials used must contribute to the activity and objective/outcome.

 

Clear, relevant instruction – Is the lesson clearly connected to the objective?  Is it in line with the student’s level and the amount you want students to learn?

 

Student activities – are the activities in line with the lesson objective?  Everything you have them do must contribute to their accomplishing the lesson objective.

 

The plan must include the following:

 

A description of the students for whom the lesson is intended.

 

A description of work leading up to this lesson and following it.

 

A summary of the lesson – title + short description

 

Instructional objective – purpose of the lesson.  Why are you teaching it?  What will they be able to do?

 

Parts – activities, materials, etc.

 

Process – What are the steps of the lesson?

 

Assessment – How will you determine how well the students have accomplished the objectives?

 

A description of work/activities following this lesson.
