Federal government agency involved in the investigation of charges of employment discrimination.

Internship Duties:

General Internship:  Interviewing prospective charging parties and assisting charging parties in drafting formal charges; making initial assessments of case files and developing investigative plans; participating in fact-finding conferences; analyzing company records such as personnel records; interviewing witnesses; conciliating settlements; assessing case files and making recommendations on the outcomes of investigations.

 

Mediator Internship: Tracking the movement of charges into and out of the mediation unit; contacting employees and employers or their legal representatives to inform them of the advantages of mediation and to schedule mediations.  Attend mediation first as an observer, then a co-mediator and finally a lead mediator.  This internship also usually involved some research to advance understanding of the effect of mediation on our stakeholders.  Past interns have surveyed community based mediator; interviewed attorneys from the top firms representing employees and employers in discrimination suits in Western New York; and research outcomes for employers who have failed to reach settlement in mediation.

Computer Knowledge Required: 

MS Word

 

Specific Skills Required:

Good written and oral communication skills.  Interest in employment law; helpful for students considering careers in legal, government, or the personnel fields.
