ANTHONY J. NOWAKOWSKI

VITA

EDUCATION

Dr. Nowakowski holds a Ph.D. degree in Mathematics Education from the State University of New York at Buffalo (1992), a M.A. Degree (with honors) in Mathematics (1968) and a B.S. Degree in Secondary Mathematics Education (1964), both from the State University College at Buffalo. Additionally, he has permanent New York State Certification in Secondary Mathematics.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Since his "semi-retirement" from Buffalo State College, Dr. Nowakowski worked part-time for two years as the Coordinator of Learning Technologies for the Center for Development of Human Services, which is the largest trainer of social services workers in New York state.  While at the Center, he developed multimedia instructional materials for distribution by CD/DVD and intranet/Internet technologies and designed smart classrooms that have been implemented statewide in CDHS regional offices.  Dr. Nowakowski is a  Professor Emeritus and continues to teach two courses per semester in the Computer Information Systems Department at State University of New York College at Buffalo, a position he initially assumed in September of 1986.  When a full-time faculty member,  he taught undergraduate and graduate courses in computer literacy, introductory and intermediate programming courses, computer architecture, and educational uses of multimedia and the Internet.  His activities outside of the classroom included participation in the design of a Masters in Educational Computing program, of which he was  the coordinator.  Before its reorganization, Dr. Nowakowski was a member of the Advisory Board for the Center for Enhancement of Learning and Teaching and was a consultant for faculty members who received multimedia and Internet related CELT grants.  He has participated in the hardware and software selection for the college's "high tech" classrooms and for several campus microcomputer laboratories.  Dr. Nowakowski has piloted several campus technology initiatives.  He integrated the use of LAN-based CD-ROM tutorials into computer literacy courses.  Using distance learning technologies, he employed two-way interactive television to teach an undergraduate computer literacy course to high school students located at remote sites.  Dr. Nowakowski implemented the use of the Internet as a distribution medium for course materials and conducted several workshops to show other faculty how to use this resource.  These initiatives have culminated in the design and implementation of the first asynchronous Internet-based multimedia-enhanced course offered at Buffalo State College.  In recognition of his efforts in promoting the use of instructional technology, Dr. Nowakowski was appointed Faculty Technology Intern with the Office of Academic Affairs for the 1997-98 academic year.

From 1992 to 1996, Dr. Nowakowski was an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Learning and Instruction Department at the State University of New York at Buffalo. He designed a database system to manage the student teacher and host school records for the Buffalo Research Institute on Education for Teaching. From 1974 to 1988, Dr. Nowakowski was a part-time Assistant Professor teaching classes for the mathematics, computer science, and data processing departments at Erie Community College

Prior to his current position at Buffalo State College, Dr. Nowakowski taught physics, mathematics and computer courses to students in grades seven to twelve in the Kenmore-Tonawanda Union Free School District for twenty-one years. During this time he developed and wrote the syllabi for the majority of the high school computer courses in this school district and either chaired or served on numerous committees that guided the district in selecting microcomputer hardware, software, and textbooks and in developing and administering their computer facilities. He has taught a full range of computer courses at the high school level, from literacy courses up through Advanced Placement Computer Science sections, and has experience with a variety of microcomputer based CAI software. He has presented several faculty seminars on programming and computer usage for educators.

Dr. Nowakowski is an experienced programmer in Visual Basic, Pascal, Java, JavaScript, VBScript, and c/c++, and in the use of several word processor, spreadsheet, and graphics packages for microcomputers. Additionally, he has extensive experience with the following operating systems: System 8, Windows, MS-DOS, UNIX, and ALPHA/VMS.

Dr. Nowakowski has worked with a variety of educational software on both the IBM and Macintosh platforms. He was involved in two projects incorporating  CD-ROM technology.  Dr. Nowakowski was the director of the Multimedia Preview Center involving Buffalo State College, City of Buffalo Public Schools, and the Grand Island School District.  He also consulted on another project that was involved with the production of interactive multimedia materials on CD-ROM for statewide distribution to all county social services departments.  Additionally, he has prepared multimedia materials and created a browser-based interface for three asynchronous distributed learning graduate courses that are delivered using the Internet and an accompanying CD-ROM.  Two of these graduate courses have been taught  internationally to students in Medellin and Manizales, Colombia.

In October 1991 he was requested to serve as a member of the Technology Committee for the Grand Island Board of Education, and in this capacity he was the chairman of the secondary education component of the committee. This group then recommended the purchase of computer technology for the Grand Island Schools.
