Political pressure/funding potential
Certain groups yield more political pressure because many people sympathize & are willing to support their cause (cancer research)
Other groups are marginalized (seen as different from oneself), e.g. persons with AIDS or families whose children died of SIDS (a condition associated with poor minorities)
