The Evidence:
Christopher Columbus (who created the idea that the world is round simply to gain funding for his sailing trips) never did sail around the world. He simply sailed to the Americas. His theory was never proven, but the inconsistency is ignored because of what he did accomplish.
In fact the knowledgeable leaders knew that the world really was flat. Specifically, the Kings of England, Italy, and Spain all denied Columbus’ request for funding because they all knew the world was flat. They had the best and most scientific minds to consult, along with numerous first hand accounts, and knew conclusively the world was flat.
If the world was round everything would fall off the rounded edges. And even if there is a static process that holds everything to the Earth, water is not static and would fly off (especially if the Earth rotates on an axis as is assumed). This is an argument that even the uneducated of Columbus’ time understood:
“Why, how can the earth be round?" they cried. "The water would all spill out if it were, and the men who live on the other side would all be standing on their heads with their feet waving in the air." And then they laughed all the harder.”

If the world was round, we would see a curved horizon, not a flat horizontal (hence the name HORIZON) plain. Science Digest (1980) points out …. “ from among the Joshua trees, creosote bushes, and tumbleweeds surrounding the southern California hillside, you have a spectacular view of the Mojave Desert. It looks as flat as a pool table.” |
