Remembering the Great Depression

K-W-L Chart Activity

 

In this activity, you will work with a partner to identify your impressions and discover new information by investigating Web sites about the Great Depression.

Using the K-W-L Chart, you will:

1.    Identify things you know (K) about the Great Depression

2.    Ask questions about things you wonder (W) about the Great Depression

3.    List factual information concerning what you learned (L) after investigating information about the Great Depression.

Instructions:

1.    Once the chart appears on your browser (you will need to have Adobe Acrobat Reader), print it out and use it to complete the exercises below.

2.    In the left-hand (K) column, make a list of at least 5 things you know about the Great Depression. If you’re not sure you know anything about the topic, it’s okay to make guesses!

American or world leaders during the Depression

Books, movies, or entertainment from the Depression

3.    Once you’ve completed the “Know” column, make another list in the center (W) column of at least 5 things you wonder, or what like to know, about the Depression.

4.    Choose one of the following Web sites to gather information about the Depression. Once you’ve investigated the topic, list at least 5 pieces of information you’ve learned about the Depression in the right-hand (L) column.

5.    When you’ve completed the K-W-L Chart, compare your original “Know” list with the final “Learn” list. Discuss the results with your partner and report similarities or differences between items in each column to the class.
