Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird is a moving
portrayal of a Southern town confronting its own prejudices when a
black man is unjustly accused of assaulting a young white woman.
To Kill A Mockingbird is a coming-of-age novel,
narrated as a memoir from the perspective of a young girl growing up
during the Great Depression of the 1930's. The narrator describes
small-town life during the era as part of her story. Understanding
background information to the Depression can help you understand more
about the setting of To Kill A Mockingbird.
First published in 1960, To Kill A Mockingbird won the
Pultizer Prize for literature and was made into an Academy
Award-winning movie in 1962.
