Remembering
the Great Depression
This project was
designed to provide teachers with a range of technology-enriched activities to
enhance the study of American literature set during the Great Depression.
Because of variations in curricula, prescriptive rubrics for activities will
not fulfill every classroom’s needs.
Therefore, the recommended method for assessing student achievement
using this site is through portfolio-based, authentic assessment. The portfolio
approach allows for teacher discretion in determining evaluation measures and
also involves students in self-assessment and decision-making about their
learning processes.
To use the portfolio to greatest advantage, students should select
their best work from a variety of activities to demonstrate their command of a
range of ELA experiences. By requiring submissions from several categories,
teachers can ensure students have mastered content, practiced critical
thinking, and engaged in creative response to language and literature.
Considerations for portfolio submissions should also consider a scope of
technology infusion and competency skills.
Individual teachers may determine the number of submissions from each
category of activities to fulfill the portfolio requirements. In addition,
students may be asked to submit a final self-reflective piece to synthesize
their learning experience.
